A political pressure group, the Abia Solidarity Forum, has called on anti-corruption and security agencies to remain impartial and uphold due process as political activities gather momentum in Abia State.
Speaking at a press briefing in Umuahia on Sunday, the group’s spokesperson, Chijioke Okwuoha, said the forum had received unverified information suggesting that petitions and media reports could emerge linking Labour Party chieftain and Bende Federal Constituency aspirant, Hon. Chima Anyaso, to alleged financial crimes.
He, however, stressed that the information had not been independently verified and urged the relevant authorities to ensure that any petitions or complaints received are handled in line with the law and without external influence.
Okwuoha said the forum supports lawful investigations where there is credible evidence but maintained that security and anti-corruption agencies should carry out their duties independently and professionally.
“We have received information, which we are treating as unverified, suggesting that there may be efforts to involve the names of institutions such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS) in matters that could become politically contentious. If true, such a development would be unfortunate and could undermine public confidence in these institutions.”
The forum called on the EFCC, the Nigeria Police Force, the DSS and other relevant agencies to continue discharging their constitutional responsibilities professionally, ensuring that every petition is assessed on its merit and in accordance with due process.
It also appealed to political stakeholders in Abia State to conduct their activities peacefully and avoid actions that could increase political tension ahead of the elections.
The group encouraged voters to focus on candidates’ programmes, records and campaign issues while allowing democratic processes to take their course. It also urged supporters of all political parties and aspirants to remain law-abiding and promote issue-based campaigns.
The claims and concerns raised by the group have not been independently verified. There was no immediate response from Hon. Chima Anyaso, the EFCC, the Nigeria Police Force or the DSS as of the time this report was filed.
