Lillyland Schools located in IBA area of Lagos State on Saturday staged its maiden Inter-House Sports Competition at the Lagos State University Sports Center, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s 10-year history.
Green House better known as WATSEE emerged overall winners with an impressive haul of 15 gold, eight silver and seven bronze medals. Yellow House finished as first runners-up with 13 gold, 12 silver and 12 bronze medals, while Blue House placed third with 10 gold, 10 silver and eight bronze medals. Red House settled for fourth position with two gold, 12 silver and eight bronze medals. Head of Schools, Pastor (Mrs) Thecla Ogwumike presented the overall winners trophy at the end of the event.
The colourful event also attracted participation from seven other schools within the Iba area, adding competitive depth to the various track and field events.
Speaking at the occasion, the Chairman of the school, Emmanuel Ogu Oparah, described the competition as a major step towards promoting unity, discipline, teamwork and healthy rivalry among pupils.
The event was attended by dignitaries including the Chairman of the occasion, Nwachukwu Kenneth, and the Parents-Teachers Forum Chairman, Ifeoma Ibeh, alongside sponsors, parents, teachers and members of the media.
In his remarks, Oparah paid glowing tribute to his wife, Lillian Oparah, acknowledging her vision and commitment in establishing the school.
He revealed that while he is often credited for the school’s achievements, his contribution was limited to supporting the idea at its inception.
“Today marks not just the beginning of a sporting event, but the start of a transition that will help build character, resilience and leadership skills in our pupils,” he said.
Oparah also commended the school’s management, staff and organising committee for successfully delivering the event, urging pupils to prioritise sportsmanship and teamwork over the desire to win.
“To our dear children, this is your moment to shine. Whether you win or not, participation, integrity and teamwork are the true victories,” he added.
The competition, declared open earlier by the chairman of the occasion, featured a wide range of track and field events, showcasing the pupils’ talents in a vibrant and enthusiastic atmosphere.
Organisers say the Inter-House Sports Competition is set to become an annual fixture, aimed at promoting holistic education and strengthening community spirit within the school.
