Senator Uba Sani is a renowned civil rights activist, frontline politician, development worker, social entrepreneur, philanthropist and accomplished businessman whose career reflects a rare blend of activism, statesmanship, and leadership.
He emerged as Governor of Kaduna State on May 29, 2023 at a time the state needed peace and security like oxygen.
In the turbulent era of Nigeria’s struggle for democracy, he numbered among the youngest and most fearless combatants who challenged military dictatorship, aligning himself with the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) in its campaign to validate the annulled 1993 presidential election, an early demonstration of the courage that would define his later career.
His political career subsequently flourished through advisory roles to the Presidency, the Federal Capital Territory Administration and the Kaduna State Government, culminating in his election to the 9th Senate, where he represented Kaduna Central and chaired the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and Other Financial Institutions. This position sharpened his understanding of public finance.
Since his emergence as the Governor of Kaduna State, Uba Sani has pursued an ambitious agenda of renewal. His administration has achieved notable progress in education and healthcare, revitalising both sectors through substantial infrastructure development and personnel training. He has upgraded a primary healthcare centre in every local government area into a specialised centre of excellence.
On the vexed question of security, he has shown considerable resolve. Banditry, kidnapping and the wanton killings that once blighted Kaduna State have remarkably diminished under his stewardship, as trust has been rebuilt among key stakeholders through intelligence led operations and expanded community engagement.
He has, moreover, repositioned the state as a hub for agro industrial investment, transforming its agricultural fortunes, while overseeing a remarkable fiscal turnaround that saw internally generated revenue climb from less than N14 billion in 2021 to more than N81 billion in 2024 through digital reforms and the elimination of leakages.
His commitment to inclusive governance saw him championing a longstanding Muslim-Christian arrangement in the state’s leadership, while his peace-building efforts have helped bridge longstanding divides among Kaduna’s diverse communities.
Beyond governance, he founded the Uba Sani Foundation in 2018 to champion healthcare, education and vocational empowerment for the underprivileged, a philanthropic instinct he has carried into office. He has spoken of committing half of his salary to a trust fund for the poor and vulnerable, and has championed transparency through open government initiatives, engaging global partners such as the Open Government Partnership on matters of civic accountability.
A man shaped equally by activism and statesmanship, Governor Uba Sani represents a leader determined to reconcile Kaduna’s turbulent past with a more stable and prosperous future, one grounded in security, education, agriculture and inclusive governance.
For his long standing interest in the welfare of people, public accountability, and delivery of democracy dividends he is The Sun Governor of the Year 2026.
