Gov Seyi Makinde: Indomitable politician

Over the years, Governor Seyi Makinde has steadily built a reputation of being one of Nigeria’s most pragmatic, transparent, and people-focused governors – a leader whose actions speak louder than politics.

His journey from being an engineer and entrepreneur to political reformer reflects resilience and passion for service. Before venturing into politics, Engr. Makinde distinguished himself in the oil and gas sector. He is the founder of Makon Group, an indigenous engineering firm.

His transition into public service came with a determination to bring the discipline of the private sector into governance. This is a promise he has kept.

Since assuming office in 2019, he has repositioned Oyo State to become a model for effective governance in Nigeria.

His administration has transformed the state through strategic investments guided by the ‘Roadmap for Sustainable Development.’ In education, over 100,000 out-of-school children were reintegrated into the school system; 21,000 teachers recruited, and over 600 projects executed, including converting Emmanuel Alayande College into a university and securing sole ownership of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology for Oyo State. In the health sector, the state has witnessed the rehabilitation of 200 Primary Healthcare Centres, the establishment of modern facilities, and improved disease control.

In infrastructure development, Governor Makinde’s administration has executed over 335 kilometres of roads, modern terminals, and airport upgrades. It also strengthened security through Amotekun, boosted IGR by 295 percent, promoted agribusiness, tourism, and youth empowerment, while ensuring regular salaries and fiscal discipline.

His leadership style is calm, analytical, and inclusive. All these stand him out in a political climate often defined by noise and division. Within his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), he is respected for his independent thinking and commitment to principle over expediency.
