The Super Falcons of Nigeria will lock horns with the Lioness of England at the Round of 16 of the ongoing FIFA Women’s World Cup for a place in the quarterfinals today. The match will be broadcast live on GOtv.
The Falcons advanced to the knockout stage against all odds having been drawn in a difficult group B against co-host Australia, Olympic champions Canada and debutant Republic of Ireland. Two draws and one victory in three matches saw the Nigerians finish the group in second place with five points.
Randy Waldrum’s team will face a tougher opponent in the Lioness, who currently boasts a perfect record in the tournament with three wins in three matches against Haiti, Denmark and China in the group stage. This match will air on SuperSelect 1 (ch 64) at 8:30am.
Both sides last faced each other in the group stage of the 1995 edition of the tournament in Sweden where the Lioness won by a slim 3-2 scoreline. The Falcons will have to put up a solid defensive display to defeat Sarina Wiegman’s team currently placed fourth in FIFA’s monthly rankings.
