Go Senegalese all the way

Untitled 27

By Christy Anyanwu

At a recent Mounir Moda fashion show in Dakar, Senegal, Ade Bakare, displayed a collection inspired by the Senegalese style.

Ade created a beautiful collection that was evocative of the Senegalese dress sense, that featured lots of flowy boubous. Incidentally, the boubou is a Senegalese design that has become very fashionable, especially when done in vivid, bold, bright coloured dresses in burnt orange, pink with lime greens, burnished brocades in gold and mint greens. The textures of the fabrics are  also regal, ranging from chiffons, tulle, brocade, lace, silk organzas and delicate flower petals used as details. The collection for summer 23 has a rich luxurious feel that is African-inspired and very modern.

“The Senegalese women are known to cover their hair with beautiful wraps in all shapes and forms. So, I decided to create a turban that is wrapped beautifully around an inner cone becoming a hat but with a turban feel and look, in various bright colours such as blue, purple, orange, gold and greens to match some of the dresses, “ Ade Bakare enthused, in a chat.
