The Embassy of Germany in Nigeria has provided funding for the country’s National Adaptation Plan (NAP) and Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
The project, titled ‘Empowering Youth Civil Societies to Build Stronger Communities in Nigeria,’ is implemented by the Network of Youth for Sustainable Initiative, and has enhanced youth participation in climate policy implementation, fostering grassroots community dialogues, and promoting sustainable innovation.
NGYouthSDGs Communication Manager, Oloruntobi Adejare, explained in a statement that through the project, youths have been trained on Nigeria’s climate policies.
According to her, there have been step-down training sessions organised by the selected youth CSOs in five Nigerian states (Kaduna, Nasarawa, Ondo, Delta, and Enugu) to further spread knowledge.
In addition, she said there have been physical community dialogues to capture grassroots perspectives on climate vulnerabilities and risks in Kaduna, Nasarawa, Ondo, and Enugu States.
“Development of local adaptation plans informed by community dialogues and stakeholder review; creation and piloting of a learning toolkit to simplify Nigeria’s NAP and NDCs, with feedback incorporated for updates; development of a Learning Management System (LMS) to house online courses created during the project for continuous learning,” are some of the impacts of the project.
Furthermore, she noted that the training has prepared the youths for the Nigeria Futures Summit, especially ahead of COP29.
“Launch of the Sustainable Innovation Lab, where 12 innovators were selected for capacity building, peer mentorship, and pitching for seed funding to scale their impact.
“Development of a case study showcasing the journey and impact of the selected innovators, to be launched at the event,” she said.
“After a successful round of learning sessions, mentorship sessions, and pitch sessions, 5 million naira will be given to four innovators who participated in the Sustainable Innovation Lab to support their sustainable innovations and to continue to drive impact. 1st winner – 2 million naira, 2nd winner – 1.5 million naira, 3rd winner – 1 million naira, and 4th winner – 500,000 naira.”
