The national president of the National Union of Road Transport Workers ( NURTW), Alhaji Najeem Usman Yasin, has read the riot act to members of the union to be of good conduct during and after the elections.
Yasin warned those assigned to deliver electoral materials and staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to various locations to live up to the memorandum of understanding between the union and INEC.
Yasin who spoke yesterday during meeting with all members of National Administrative Council of the union at the NURTW secretariat, Lagos, warned that anyone who failed to comply with the MOU would be punished according to the constitution of the NURTW.
According to him, INEC has lived up to expectations and has adhered to the conditions given to it, and, therefore, NURTW should diligently do its duty: “Anyone who sabotages (the process) during the elections would be fished out by the working committee set up to monitor the activities of our members. I want to seriously warn and remind you that NURTW is not a political party but an affiliate of the Nigerian Labour Congress. We are not under any political party. You are free citizens that are free to belong to any political party. I want you to go to the polling stations, cast your vote for any candidate of your choice and go back home. Anyone caught in any electoral malpractices will be death with.”
Yasin, who said he visited Lagos to reconcile the the warring factions of the union in Lagos, noted that he was: “happy to announce to you that people quarreling have settled.”
“We have no factions again.c We have forgiven everybody. All the people that were suspended, including Kunle Poly, have been forgiven. We have lifted the suspension on Kunle Poly and others. NURTW in Lagos is one and under the leadership of Alhaji Tajudeen Agbede. My mission in Lagos has been accomplished. I came for reconciliation and for the interest of peace; we have called back those on suspension. With the meeting today, I doubt if there is anybody who will leave here to foment trouble,” he said.
In response, chairman of the NURTW, Lagos State chapter, Agbede, said he was the happiest man on earth for the reconciliation through Yasin: “We sincerely appreciate your efforts and concern about the affairs of our state council since the ugly and unfortunate incident at the APC rally in Lagos last month Sir, your actions have really doused the tension within the state council of our union, as union activities have since resumed,” he said.
