Wife of the Kebbi State Governor Hajiya Zainab Nasir Idris has inaugurated the State Technical Working Group, TWG, on Gender Based Violence, GBV, with the mandate to intensify the fight against the scourge.

At the ceremony in Birnin Kebbi, Hajiya Zainab Idris ,who is the State Chairperson of the TWG, spoke about the necessity for collective action to eliminate all shreds of gender based violence in the society.

According to her,”I am calling on Civil Society Organizations, the Media and other stakeholders not to rest on their oars in bringing an end to this obnoxious behaviour, we must join hands together to achieve positive results”, she emphasized.

The Kebbi First Lady explained that GBV was not restricted to rape alone but affected the entire healthy wellbeing of women.

She acknowledged the good performance of members of the Technical Working Group on public awareness against the trend and ensuring the prosecution of offenders.

Speaking to newsmen after the inauguration, the Secretary of the TWG on GBV, Mallam Nasir Idris, said as part of the success story of their activities, fifty (50) rapists have been convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment by Special Courts created to adjudicate on rape cases in the state, between January and May, this year.

He immensely commended the wife of the governor, Hajiya Zainab Nasare for providing the necessary moral and material support to achieve such feat.

The Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hajiya Halima Hassan Kamba, is to serve as Vice Chairperson of the TWG, on GBV with eleven other members.
