The Federal Road Safety Commission RS8.23 Efon Alaaye Unit Command Ekiti-State has launched its 2022 EMBER months Safety Campaign with a caution on motorists to avoid excessive speeding, vehicle overloading and using of worn-out tyres which are factors that lead to road crashes.
The Unit Commander, ACC Charles P. Badoohleng delivered the Ag. Corps Marshal message at the 2022 Ember Months flag-off campaign with the theme “Avoid Speeding, Overloading and Unsafe Tyres to Arrive Alive” held at Ita-Ido Motor Park.
He explained that Ember Month is a period that comes with series of programmes and celebration resulting to high volume of traffic on the road that if not properly check could lead to crashes with resultant to loss of lives and properties.
Badoohleng said the Flag-Off is timely and admonished drivers against drunk driving, use of phone while driving and driving against traffic which pose threat to life and property.
He further informed all road users of strict enforcement on critical offences that easily result to crashes and increase public education as some of the cardinal activities associated with the season.
He enjoined all to eschew the erroneous belief associated with Ember Months and reminded everyone that speed thrills but kills.
Badoohleng said, “Federal Road Safety Corps as the lead agency in traffic administration and management in Nigeria had over the years devised novel strategies to stem the ugly trend with a view to achieve 2022 Corps Strategic Goal 1, of 15% reduction in Road Traffic Crash fatality.
“The statistical analysis in our axis here as unit of FRSC has shown that speeding is a major probable cause of Road Traffic Crashes with its resultant high rate of severity and fatality had posed serious challenge to road traffic management and safety administration with adverse effect on productivity and economic of the country.”
Badoohleng explained that stringent measures have been put in place to mitigate the worrisome trend predominantly caused by human factor and attitudes such as excessive speeding, vehicle overloading using worn-out, expired or second hand tyres distractive driving such as use of phone while driving, street searching among others.
“The Corps in all its formations has assiduously engaged in continuous public enlightenments and leveraging on technology is sacrosanct with best international practices through the introduction of Speed Limiting Device Policy adopted/accented by the Federal Government among Commercial vehicle operators in Nigeria.
“The device has immensely worked in other advanced countries like Australia, Brazil, Sweden and South Africa and has come to stay in Nigeria as well, but my appeal goes to NURTW, NARTO, RTEAN, Corporate Organizations and other Government Agencies to embrace this policy and install speed limiting device so as to kill speed before it kill us.
“It is also worthy to note that overloading has equally been identified as one of the dilapidating factor militating against the Corps mandate in achieving safe loading, reduction of severity and fatality on our roads.” He stated.
