A Ghanaian Premier League footballer, Dominic Frimpong, has died after armed robbers attacked his team while returning from an away fixture, in an incident that has sent shockwaves across Ghana’s football community.

The attack occurred on Sunday night as players of Berekum Chelsea FC were travelling along the Ahyiresu-Kwame Dwumor Sreso road in the Ashanti region, with gunmen reportedly ambushing the team bus.

According to the club, the assailants, described as masked men carrying guns and assault rifles, opened fire on the vehicle, forcing players and officials to flee into nearby bushes for safety.

“masked men wielding guns and assault rifles” fired on the team bus and forced the players to take cover in the bushes.

Police confirmed that the attack took place around 10:30 pm local time, adding that Frimpong sustained gunshot wounds during the incident and later died in hospital while receiving treatment.

“Another victim, George Owusu Afriyie, 52, was also robbed of 4,500.00 cedis ($408),” the police said.

The Ghana Football Association described the incident as a major tragedy for both the club and the country’s football ecosystem.

“Dominic was a promising young talent whose dedication and passion for the game embodied the spirit of our league,” it said.

Frimpong, 20, had joined Berekum Chelsea on loan from Aduana Stars FC earlier in the year and had already made 13 appearances, scoring two goals before his untimely death.

The incident has once again raised concerns about security for teams travelling across regions, with calls expected to grow for stronger protection measures for players and club officials on match duties.
