FOSFON President Prince Abayomi Whesu Dies at 69

Football and Other Sports Followership of Nigeria (FOSFON) has announced the death of its President, Prince Abayomi Olumuyiwa Wilfred Whesu.

Prince Whesu passed away on December 31, 2025, after a brief illness. He was 69.

In a statement signed by the Vice President of the association, Engr. Adebowale Adebayo, FOSFON described the late Whesu as a strong pillar of the organisation whose invaluable services, wise counsel and dedication would be deeply missed. The statement noted that the vacuum created by his passing would be difficult to fill, while adding that the association is grateful that he lived a fulfilled life.

FOSFON also prayed for God Almighty to grant his soul eternal rest and to give his family, friends and associates the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

Meanwhile, the management of Eko Club, Surulere, Lagos, has described Whesu’s death as a great loss to the club. Speaking through its President, Adedeji Surajudeen Lawal, Esq., GCHB, the club said the late Whesu, who once served as its Sports Secretary, was an easy-going personality and a perfect gentleman whose demise is a big blow.

Tributes have continued to pour in from across the Nigerian football community. President General of the Nigeria Football Supporters Club, Dr. Rafiu Oladipo, described Whesu as a hardworking and passionate administrator who served the club with distinction.

According to Oladipo, Whesu worked with him for 18 years, serving as Secretary General for eight years and later as Worldwide Scribe for five years, carrying out his duties meticulously to the satisfaction of members.

“Whesu was a perfect gentleman whom I worked with closely for 18 years. Every member of the club will miss him because he was a jolly good fellow,” Oladipo said.

He recalled that during Whesu’s tenure as Secretary General, former CAF President Issa Hayatou fondly referred to him as “Dogo” because of his height, while then NFA Secretary General, Sanni Toro, addressed him as a colleague — a testament to the high regard in which he was held.

The late Whesu served for many years as National Secretary of the Nigeria Football Supporters Club before founding FOSFON. He will be laid to rest on February 6 at the Atan Cemetery, Yaba, Lagos.
