As the 2027 general elections draw closer, a forum of former elected councillors in Benue South Senatorial District has endorsed aspirant and former Commissioner of Finance in Benue State, Dr David Olofu, to replace the incumbent Senator in the National Assembly.
The former grassroots legislators pinned their endorsement on what they described as Dr Olofu’s qualities, anchored on his humanistic posture, as well as the need to entrench equity, fairness, and social justice in the politics of the zone.
Moving the motion for his endorsement and adoption as the candidate for the 2027 senatorial election, one of the leaders of the former local parliamentarians, which cuts across different parties, Dan Atayi, who represented Eke council ward of Okpokwu Local Government Council, decried the current political situation in the senatorial district, saying, “we need a Senator who could champion and accelerate the developmental cause of the senatorial district.”
The Forum, which has a formidable strength of over 2,000 members, made up of Chairmen of the State Councillors’ Forum at different times, Legislative Leaders, Deputy Leaders, Majority Leaders, Deputy Majority Leaders, Chief Whips, Minority Leaders, and members, agreed unanimously and adopted the principle of power rotationality across the four Federal Constituencies in Benue South Senatorial District for the Senate seat.
The motions for the adoption of the rotation of the Benue South Senate to Apa/Agatu Federal Constituency and the endorsement of the candidature of David Olofu were moved by the Convener, Atayi, a rights activist and a former councillor representing Ekeh Ward of Okpokwu LGA of the state and the State Chairman of the Forum of Councillors, 2017–2019, and were seconded by Speakers from each of the four Federal Constituencies.
Seconding the motion, Sunday Ochigbo, a former Leader of Okpokwu Legislative Council who spoke on behalf of Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency, described the move as patriotic, saying Dr Olofu’s philanthropic initiatives have endeared him to all and sundry.

Similarly, Peter Onyokparu, a former Leader of Oju Legislative Council, on behalf of Oju/Obi Federal Constituency, said the rotational principle and the candidacy of Dr Olofu would foster peace and unity, which he said were the elixirs of development of the entire Benue South Senatorial District.
Also, Mr Adeka Godwin, who spoke for Otukpo/Ohimini Federal Constituency, and Magaji Alade, a former Leader of Apa Legislative Council, who spoke on behalf of Apa/Agatu Federal Constituency, all told good stories of Olofu and called on their people to support him.
Meanwhile, the senatorial aspirant, who is contesting on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dr David Olofu, thanked the former legislators for the confidence reposed in him, saying, “it’s profitable to follow the course of emancipation than to be pigeon-holed in sycophancy, servitude, partisanship, segregation, underdevelopment and poor representation”.
He assured that the Forum would be part of his proposed Benue South People’s Assembly when, by the grace of God, he emerges victorious because of the unique and special status of elected councillors as leaders in their various wards.
He therefore urged the grassroots leaders to network and sensitise the people positively in order to achieve success at the poll, to enable him galvanise the collective growth of the senatorial district.
Our correspondent reports that the endorsement marked the seventh since he began consultation to run for the Senate to represent the people of Benue South at the Red Chamber, come 2027.
