A South Korean court on Thursday sentenced former president Yoon Suk Yeol to life imprisonment after finding him guilty of insurrection over his December 2024 martial law declaration.

The ruling at the Seoul Central District Court held that Yoon’s actions were aimed at paralysing the National Assembly and suppressing political opposition.

He had announced martial law in a televised address, claiming drastic measures were needed to root out “anti-state forces”.

Presiding judge Ji Gwi-yeon said the court found that troops were dispatched to the assembly in a deliberate attempt to block lawmakers.

“The Court finds that the intention was to paralyse the assembly for a considerable period,” she said.

The judge added that the declaration imposed enormous social costs and that there was little sign of remorse from the former leader.

“It is difficult to find any indication that the defendant has expressed remorse for that,” Ji stated.

“We sentence Yoon to life imprisonment,” the court ruled, sealing a dramatic downfall for the impeached ex-president.
