Flight diversion delays Boniface’s knee surgery schedule

Thursday was intended to bring clarity regarding Victor Boniface’s health, but the originally scheduled examination by a knee specialist in Innsbruck, Austria, was abruptly cancelled.

The Nigerian striker, on loan from Bayer Leverkusen to SV Werder Bremen, had nothing to do with this setback—the blame lies entirely with the weather in Austria.

Reports from DeichStube confirm that Boniface’s flight was diverted to Munich due to heavy snowfall in Tyrol.

He is now set to reschedule his appointment with an expert Prof. Dr. Christian Fink today (Friday), which will determine the necessity of surgery.

Peter Niemeyer, of Werder Bremen, stated: “We will wait for the test results; the next steps will depend on that.” It’s clear that this situation requires patience, but one fact stands out, Boniface will not play for Bremen again this season.

If he opts for surgery, he will be sidelined for the remainder of the campaign. Should he decide against the operation, ongoing issues will also prevent him from returning to the field.

Consultations between the medical teams of Werder and Bayer 04 Leverkusen have already occurred, with a strong recommendation for Boniface to undergo surgery. Originally, the procedure was supposed to happen last summer to address the cartilage damage, but Boniface chose a different course of action. This alternative has been unfortunate for Boniface, Werder Bremen, and Bayer Leverkusen. “We viewed it as an opportunity in the summer, and every opportunity carries a risk,” Niemeyer asserted recently. “Ultimately, we must acknowledge that we all expected more from this loan. Unfortunately, it hasn’t played out as we had hoped.”
