Five things to know about #HallelujahChallenge

Hallelujah challenge

By Esther Bassey

What started as a simple online worship session in Pastor Nathaniel Bassey’s living room has grown into a global movement of faith.

Known as the #HallelujahChallenge, the nightly praise session brings together thousands of believers from around the world to worship, pray, and share testimonies of divine encounters.

Here are five things to know about the globally followed program:

1. Started from Nathaniel Bassey’s living room

The Hallelujah Challenge began quietly on June 1, 2017, when Pastor Nathaniel Bassey went live from his living room on Instagram to praise God.

That simple act sparked a wave of worship across nations, drawing tens of thousands of people who joined online each night to sing and pray.

2. Inspired by the #TonguesChallenge

Before the Hallelujah Challenge, Pastor Nathaniel led the #TonguesChallenge, which encouraged Christians to spend time praying in tongues daily.

The overwhelming response to that prayer movement inspired him to launch another, and this time focused on praise, to glorify God and provoke divine encounters.

3. More than just midnight praise

Although officially tagged as an online praise session beginning at 11:59 p.m., the program often runs for hours as the Spirit leads.

It’s a blend of intense worship, prayers, and moments of reflection with many participants describing the atmosphere as electric and deeply spiritual.

4. Testimonies from across the world

Over the years, the Challenge has become known as a hub of miracles. Participants have shared testimonies of healing, financial breakthroughs, marriages restored, and long-awaited prayers answered.

One participant shared on the official page: “My husband’s court case had been dragging for months. On the very first day of the Hallelujah Challenge, I joined in praise till morning. The next week, we received a letter that my husband had been cleared and no further action would be taken. God did it!”

Stories like this are common during the Challenge, reinforcing its reputation as “a mountain of high praises, fervent prayer, heartfelt worship, deliverance, breakthroughs, miracles, and signs.”

5. Sometimes ends with a physical festival of praise

Beyond the online sessions, the Hallelujah Challenge often culminates in a grand Festival of Praise, held at a physical venue.

The festival brings worshippers together for a night of thanksgiving, intercession, and testimonies, rounding off what began online with a powerful in-person celebration.
