FIVE men were yesterday, beaten to a pulp by irate mob at the Relief Market in Owerri, the Imo State capital for allegedly defiling an eight- year- old girl.
A source at the market disclosed that one of the suspects whose names could not be ascertained as at press time, had allegedly lured the girl, who was hawking sachet water to a shop, and locked the victim inside.
According to the source, it was the strident cries of the victim that aroused the suspicion of the people, who immediately went to the shop and forced the door open and dragged the suspects out.
The suspects, who were stripped naked by the mob were beaten to stupor. However, two of the suspected randy men escaped.
Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Andrew Enwerem, said immediately the police was alerted, a team was dispatched, that rescued three of the suspects from being lynched by the mob.
He said the matter is being investigated.
