The Ogun State Police Command has charged five suspects before the Ota Magistrate Court for allegedly assaulting policemen with cutlasses, stones and bottles and obstructing officers on lawful duty.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday.
Babaseyi said the incident occurred on October 2, around The Bells area, Iyana-Iyesi, Ota, when a police patrol team intercepted a suspect found in possession of a large quantity of substances suspected to be Indian hemp.
While conveying the handcuffed suspect to the station, the officers were allegedly ambushed by a group of persons who attacked them with cutlasses, stones and bottles, injuring personnel, damaging the operational vehicle and aiding the escape of the arrested suspect.
Following intelligence-led operations, police arrested five suspects: Morenikeji Badmus, 36; Adedoja Segun, 40; Jeremiah Odise Ugbede Onride, 49; Mike Stephen, 28; and David Odeh, 32.
Babaseyi said the suspects were arraigned on counts bordering on conspiracy, serious assault on police officers, obstruction of lawful duty and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.
He added that efforts were ongoing to arrest other fleeing suspects.
The Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, CP Bode Ojajuni, said the safety of officers on lawful duty remains a priority and urged members of the public to refrain from confrontation with law enforcement and channel grievances through lawful means.
