First Lady of Nigeria, Oluremi Tinubu, has called on Nigerians to join a global push for urgent climate action, stressing that the effects of climate change are already harming lives and livelihoods across the country.

Speaking in a message released Friday to mark World Environment Day 2026, with the theme, ‘A Global Call for Climate Action, the First Lady said: “I join Nigerians and millions around the world in calling for urgent and collective action to protect our planet and secure a better future for generations to come.”

She warned that climate change is “no longer a distant threat,” pointing to rising temperatures, flooding, drought, desertification and environmental degradation as immediate challenges.

“These phenomena continue to affect lives, livelihoods, food security and public health across the globe, including here in Nigeria,” she said.

The First Lady urged action at every level, saying individuals, communities and nations must all contribute to environmental restoration and resilience.

“As individuals, communities, and nations, we all have a role to play in restoring our environment, promoting sustainable practices, protecting our natural resources, and building climate-resilient societies,” she said.

Mrs Tinubu called for unity behind the World Environment Day theme: “Let us rise together in this global call for climate action and work toward a safer, greener, and more sustainable future for all.” She wished Nigerians a “Happy Environment Day 2026.”
