The First Lady of Nigeria, Oluremi Tinubu, has been named Champion of a new national initiative known as Energise Commercialisation, a programme aimed at promoting the commercialisation of home-grown inventions and innovations across the country.
According to a statement by her media aide, Busola Kukoyi, the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Kingsley Udeh, announced the appointment during a visit to the First Lady at the State House, Abuja.
He explained that the programme is designed to reposition Nigeria from a consumer of foreign technology to a creator and exporter of indigenous innovations.

“The visit was to inform the First Lady of the ministry’s decision to have her be the Champion of the programme,” Udeh stated. “It is aimed at moving the nation from a technology-importing nation to a technology-innovating nation.”
He described Mrs Tinubu’s role as pivotal to the implementation of the programme, which targets Nigerian youths and women with commercially viable inventions. According to him, the initiative has already commenced sensitisation efforts and will soon embark on a nationwide campaign led by the First Lady.
“We will be going to schools, at all levels, and to the nooks and crannies of the states to reach even the unlettered who have such inventions and innovations,” the minister said. “We have the brains, and we will be helping them achieve their goals. Nigeria cannot be left out of the world technology revolution.”
