As Nigeria marks an important milestone—70 years since women first joined the nation’s police force—First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu has publicly praised the Nigerian Police Force for its steadfast commitment to justice and equality, highlighting the institution’s progress in mainstreaming gender as a key strategic priority.

Speaking at the landmark celebration held in Abuja to honour “70 Years of Courage and Service: Honouring Women in Policing, Inspiring the Future,” she acknowledged the historic and ongoing contributions of female police officers who have played vital roles in law enforcement, peacekeeping, and community safety both within Nigeria and internationally.

“This event is not only a celebration of shared global values but also a tribute to the women who have stood courageously on the frontlines of peace and security,” Tinubu stated.

According to a statement issued by her media aide, Busola Kukoyi, the First Lady commended the Nigerian Police under the leadership of Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun for aligning with global best practices in embracing gender mainstreaming as a strategic institutional priority.

“As we commemorate this 70-year milestone, we also cast our gaze forward. The task before us is to build an even stronger foundation for the next generation of women officers,” she remarked. “To the women of the Nigeria Police Force, I say this: You have not only upheld the law; you have uplifted your homes and the nation. You have been exemplary peacekeepers and ambassadors of Nigerian excellence abroad.”

Speaking to young Nigerian girls and women, Mrs Tinubu called on them to consider careers in policing. “If you feel the call to serve our great nation, know that there is a place for you. This uniform symbolises service, dignity, honour, and responsibility.”

Inspector General Kayode Egbetokun reflected on the evolution of women’s roles within the police force, emphasising their progression into all facets of policing—from operational and investigative roles to leadership positions on national and international platforms.

“Women have earned their place across every layer of policing. Their contributions reflect the truth that excellence wears many faces,” IGP Egbetokun stated.

Reflecting on the journey since the first women joined in 1955—initially assigned to welfare and clerical duties—he praised their professionalism and courage, qualities that have reshaped Nigeria’s policing culture.

Also speaking at the event, Assistant Inspector General of Police Aishatu Abubakar Baju celebrated the exceptional contributions of policewomen in diverse fields including intelligence, tactical operations, youth protection, and community development.

She emphasised their pivotal role in national security and crisis management, praising their courage and emotional intelligence.

Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, challenged female officers to embody resilience, integrity, and a relentless drive to push boundaries, urging them to uphold discipline and professionalism as pillars for building a secure Nigeria and inspiring future generations.

Highlighting the global significance of the occasion, Shante Knowles, the first female Commissioner of Police of the Bahamas, delivered the keynote address.

Drawing on her own groundbreaking journey from a 15-year-old recruit to the top of her force, she applauded Nigeria’s pioneering women police officers and encouraged Nigerian women to continue breaking barriers with courage, empathy, and leadership.
