Five hundred students across 10 public schools in Lagos State would be trained on creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
The training programme is organised by Texaco Nigeria Outer Shelf Limited, a Chevron company, in partnership with the STEAM Fun Fest team, the initiative is known as ‘Project iCommunity’, a STEAM competition designed to encourage creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills for 500 students in 10 public schools in Lagos.
The event is centred around the theme ‘Solving our community’s problems using design thinking’ is aimed at developing the next generation of problem-solvers and change makers.
Although the project has began with the training of teachers and the on-boarding of the 10 schools.The student training on design thinking would span four weeks across the 10 schools in education district 3, while the Pitch competition finals would hold in July.
Executive Director, STEAM Fun Fest, Titi Adewusi, said the project aligned with its commitment to sustainable social investment and youth development. She said the aim is to improve students’ problem-solving skills and prepare them for the future of work.
Adewusi said the critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity and collaboration are the important skills of the future and Project iCommunity gives children opportunities to hone their skills. She said out of the 500 students, 10 students would be selected from each school to present their school’s solution to a panel of judges at the STEAM competition pitch day.
Abiola Adebola, who represented the Lagos State Education District Three, said the project aligned with the ministry’s vision of providing quality education and preparing students for the challenges of the 21st century.
During the training of teachers and on-boarding of schools, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Education, Dr. Tola Salau, reiterated the teachers’ full commitment to ensure the success of the project.
