Aurora Ventures, an early-stage investment initiative backed by global mobility and delivery platform inDrive, has launched a new programme aimed at tackling the funding challenges faced by women-led startups in emerging markets, with Nigeria listed among its priority countries.

The initiative was unveiled following the conclusion of the 2026 Aurora Tech Award held in Santiago, Chile, where Nigerian entrepreneur, Adeola Ayoola-Famasi, emerged among the top 10 finalists selected from a record 3,400 applicants worldwide.

Other finalists included Adriana Gonzalez-Tizo (Panama), Angela Acosta-Morado (Colombia), Catalina Isaza-Innmetec (Colombia), Estefania Abello-Muta (Colombia), Maria Kawas-DomestikCo (Chile), Mariana Zuliani-OncoAI (Brazil), Mercedes Bidart-Quipu (Colombia), Patricia Florencia-Pilou (Mexico), and Penny Musengi-Pesira Technologies (Kenya).

Aurora Ventures said the programme was developed to leverage one of the world’s largest pipelines of underserved female entrepreneurial talent, drawing on insights and data generated through five years of the Aurora Tech Award.

According to the organisers, applications for the award have surged nearly 30-fold since 2021, revealing what they described as a persistent market inefficiency where high-growth businesses led by women in Africa, the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), and Latin America remain undervalued and overlooked by conventional venture capital systems.

The organisation noted that a recent Aurora research study involving more than 900 founders across 127 countries found that women entrepreneurs continue to face systemic competence scepticism and are often subjected to tougher performance expectations before accessing investment.

To address this gap, Aurora Ventures plans to invest between $180,000 and $250,000 in women-led startups at the pre-seed and seed stages.

The programme also intends to utilise the Aurora Tech Award network to identify promising startups early, before their market valuations fully reflect their growth potential.

Head of Aurora Ventures, Isabella Ghassemi-Smith, described the initiative as a strategic investment programme driven by the belief that women founders represent one of venture capital’s most overlooked opportunities.

“Over the past five years, we’ve seen a repeating pattern: exceptional women building rigorous businesses but reaching institutional capital later and on worse terms than their performance justifies,” she said.

Ghassemi-Smith added that the achievements of the 2026 top 10 finalists reflected the quality of startups Aurora Ventures intends to support.

Also speaking, Chief Growth Businesses Officer at inDrive, Andries Smit, said the company’s backing for the initiative was rooted in its own experience of overcoming funding and competitive barriers.

“We built inDrive against all odds, competing against better-funded incumbents. We see the same thing playing out with women founders in emerging markets today. Backing Aurora Ventures is not charity; it is the same bet we made on ourselves,” he said.

Aurora Ventures said its 2026 pilot phase will focus on building an initial investment portfolio and establishing the track record required to transition into a formal GP/LP fund structure.

The programme noted that beyond funding, it aims to provide portfolio companies with network access and operational support to help them scale and secure future investment rounds under fairer and more equitable conditions.
