Firm launches hygiene challenge to promote healthy habits

Dettol-Nigeria

Dettol Nigeria has launched a nationwide consumer challenge aimed at promoting consistent hygiene practices and strengthening public awareness of everyday protection against germs, especially as the country grapples with the heightened risk of infectious diseases during the rainy season.

The initiative, tagged the “Dettol Original 12hrs Protection Challenge,” invites Nigerians to share personal stories of how Dettol has featured in their lives while encouraging regular hand and body hygiene as a key defence against disease-causing germs.

The competition, which runs from July 13 to August 15, 2026 requires participants to create and post a 60-second video on Instagram featuring a bar of Dettol Original Soap and sharing their personal Dettol experience. Twenty-five winners will receive a range of prizes, with participation details available on the brand’s Instagram page.

The campaign forms part of Dettol’s broader “12 Hour Protective Shield” initiative designed to reinforce the importance of maintaining good hygiene habits in homes, schools, workplaces and public spaces.

Marketing Director, Reckitt West Africa, Boma Harrison, said Nigerians face daily exposure to germs while commuting, working, attending school and carrying out routine activities, making consistent hygiene more important than ever.

According to Harrison, regular use of Dettol Original Antibacterial Bar Soap supports the skin’s natural germ-fighting ability for up to 12 hours, helping users carry out their daily activities with greater confidence.

“We want Nigerians to make hygiene a consistent part of their everyday routines and go about their activities knowing they are protected every step of the way,” he said.

The campaign comes at a time when Nigeria is experiencing heavy rainfall and flooding in several states, including Lagos, increasing concerns over outbreaks of waterborne diseases such as cholera and typhoid. Public health experts have consistently warned that contact with contaminated floodwater significantly raises the risk of infections, underscoring the need for improved personal hygiene.

World Health Organization (WHO) has also emphasised the importance of proper hygiene, noting that good hygiene practices can reduce diarrhoea diseases by up to 30 per cent and acute respiratory infections by up to 17 per cent.

The company said the storytelling campaign is intended not only to celebrate the brand’s long-standing relationship with Nigerian families but also to encourage healthier behaviours that help prevent the spread of germs and infectious diseases.
