The FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2026 Qualifying Tournament in Lyon-Villeurbanne begins today with strong match-ups that promises plenty of action and exciting plays.
Nigeria will begin their campaign with a high-stakes encounter against Colombia in the opening fixture today, as both sides look to gain early momentum in what promises to be a competitive group.
The clash is expected to set the tone for the group, with Nigeria eager to stamp their authority early while Colombia aim to make a strong statement against Africa’s most respected team.
Nigeria’s Coach, Rena Wakama will be banking on a blend of experience and youthful energy as she seek to impose their pace, physical strength and attacking intent on the South Americans. A positive start would be crucial for the Nigerian side as they aim to position themselves strongly not minding that they have already secured a spot in the World Cup.
Colombia, however, are expected to provide a stern challenge. Renowned for their technical ability and structured style of play, the South Americans will look to control possession and frustrate the Nigerians while capitalising on any defensive lapses.
While the Nigeria-Colombia clash headlines the opening day in the group, attention will also be on the other group contenders who will face off in the other fixtures of the day.
Germany also through to the World Cup will take on Korea while host and Olympic Games silver medal winners France takes on Philippines.
The outcome of that match could also play a significant role in shaping the early standings and dynamics within the group.
