Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology has pledged commitment to driving economic growth and development through Science, Technology and Innovation (STI).
The Minister, Chief Uche Nnaji, stated this at the opening ceremony of World Science Day, with the themed: “Why Science Matters Engaging Minds and Empowering Futures” in Abuja.
Nnaji, who called for both local and global collaboration in addressing challenges like pandemics, food security and climate crisis stressed that the ministry is committed to driving partnerships across sectors from health energy and robotics, with over 22 international collaborations.
“We honor science’s vital role in building a sustainable and peaceful world. We are forming Nigeria’s commitment to harnessing science for a brighter future.
“This year’s theme, “Why Science Matters, Engaging Minds and Empowering Futures, highlights the need for global collaboration to address challenges like pandemics, food security and climate crisis” he noted
“COVID-19 reminded us that proactive scientific collaboration is essential. With over 22 international collaborations, we are advancing areas like methanol pollution, green hydrogen, tech city development and space technology, bringing scholarships and resources to strengthen our science, technology and innovation capabilities”
He added that the ministry is also investing in Nigeria’s future through initiatives like the AI Academy, cassava value chain, development and programs for youth and innovators.
“This world, science day, exhibitions and a quiz competition will be use to inspire students in science
“Our ministry remains dedicated to advancing research, aligning Nigeria’s values with global scientific and technological goals and strengthening our role in international science technology and innovation networks.”
Earlier in her welcome address, Permanent Secretary, Esuabana Nko Asanye called on Nigerians to explore ways to showcase science in the nation.
Represented by the Director, Science and technology Promotion, Ronald Okon Ukpong, the Permanent Secretary acknowledged the critical role played by science and technology in promoting peace and sustainable development.
Esuabana posited that the theme emphasises the limitless potential of science to transform the entire world through collaboration and collective action.
She further stated that the objectives of the World Science Day is to strengthen public awareness on the role of science for peaceful and sustainable societies, promote national and international solidarity for shared science between countries and to renew global commitments for the use of science for the benefit of societies.
Highlights of the event includes the presentation of awards to the winners of the quiz competition of which Federal government boys college Apo came first position, school of the gifted Gwagwalada, and Olumalu College Wuse, came second position, while Government science secondary school Maitama, came third position.
