FG inaugurates NUPRC board to enhance oil sector governance

From Adanna Nnamani, Abuja

The federal government has inaugurated a new board for the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), charging members to strengthen governance, enhance transparency, and provide strategic direction for Nigeria’s upstream petroleum sector.

Speaking at the inauguration in Abuja, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, said the development underscores the administration’s commitment to building strong institutions and improving regulatory efficiency in the oil and gas industry.

According to a statement from NUPRC on Tuesday, Akume noted that as the apex governance body of the Commission, the board is expected to provide strategic oversight, ensure policy direction, and promote institutional stability that would boost investor confidence and support sustainable development.

“This development is firmly aligned with the Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr. President, which prioritises strong institutions, the rule of law, and integrity in public service,” he said.

The newly inaugurated board is chaired by Magnus Abe, who assured that members would work closely with the Commission’s management to improve performance and deliver on its statutory mandate.

“I want to assure management that we are here strategically to work with you and see that, as much as possible, we work together to uplift the Commission and to help our country,” Abe said.

He added that the board would prioritise improving the Commission’s operational environment, including securing a more conducive office space to enhance staff productivity.

“I believe that of all the priorities we should have, getting a proper office accommodation should take priority over everything else,” he stated.

In her remarks, the Commission Chief Executive, Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, congratulated the board members and expressed confidence in their ability to provide the necessary leadership in line with the Petroleum Industry Act.

Eyesan described the inauguration as timely, noting that the global oil and gas industry is currently experiencing volatility due to geopolitical tensions and the ongoing energy transition.

“Today, the oil and gas industry is seeing volatility because of the war in the Middle East and the transition and its impact on the industry,” she said.

She added that Nigeria must position itself to respond effectively to both global disruptions and emerging opportunities, stressing that the Commission is prepared to manage potential shocks.

The NUPRC boss also reaffirmed the commitment of the Commission’s management to ongoing reforms aimed at improving efficiency and strengthening the sector.

Members of the board include representatives from key government institutions and industry stakeholders, with a mandate to ensure accountability, transparency, and regulatory independence in the administration of Nigeria’s upstream petroleum resources.
