The Federal Government (FG) has flagged off the distribution of no fewer than 8228 bags of assorted foodstuff to poor, vulnerable groups in Gombe state.
The foodstuff was delivered and distributed by the Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Isa Ali Pantami who revealed that the gesture was aimed at alleviating hunger and the high cost of living being experienced in the country.
“As a Minister of Communication and Digital Economy who is representing Gombe at the Federal Executive Council, I had informed the president that my people in Gombe are suffering as a result of hardships in the country and require assistance.
He then directed that Gombe state should be added among states the government plans to assist with foodstuff and today here we are distributing the food,” Pantami said while speaking at the flag-off ceremony on Saturday in Gombe.
The Minister explained that his team has engaged traditional and religious leaders as well as youth and other organizations to identify the poor and vulnerable groups for distribution. “We have handed over the foodstuff to our trusted leaders in the community to distribute to those in need in their various communities”.
Speaking on behalf of the Emir, Chiefs and other traditional leaders invited from the 11 Local Government Areas (LGA) of the state, the Emir of Dukku Alhaji Haruna Abdulkadir Rashid commended President Muhammadu Buhari and the minister for identifying with the needy during hard times in the country.
He said, “this will surely go far in supporting aiding the poor and vulnerable people, not in just Gombe but the whole country”. Meanwhile, the representatives of Muslim and Christian organizations in Gombe state assured that the gesture will be delivered and distributed to the targeted beneficiaries in the state.
In an interview with Daily Sun the Gombe state chairman of the joint association of persons living with disability, Umar Ali Goro appreciated the president for the gift even as he called on the federal and state governments to distribute already procured and stored food items in various silo across the country.
“These items are there wasting while people are in need, the governments should please distribute the food which was procured and planned to be distributed as COVID-19 palliative to the people in need,” Goro said.
