In a momentous event marked by scholarly discourse and international camaraderie, the Federal University of Lafia inaugurated its 3rd annual international conference opening ceremony on Tuesday.
Addressing a diverse audience of academics, researchers, and students from around the globe, Professor Shehu Abdul Rahman, Vice-Chancellor of the university, heralded the conference as a pivotal gathering for advancing human development.
“I am very delighted to declare this conference opened,” stated Professor Rahman, emphasizing the conference’s significance in facilitating dialogue on crucial issues impacting society.
The conference, hosted under the theme “Science and Humanities: Bridging the Divide for Human Development.” attracted participants worldwide, signifying its broad scope and relevance.
“This conference provides a very unique opportunity for all of us because of its scope; it has attracted participants from all over the world; people with wide-ranging knowledge on the issue of human development,” Professor Rahman remarked.
Commending the dedication of the organizing team led by Prof. Aleruchi Chuku, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Professor Rahman highlighted the university’s commitment to integrity, innovation, and excellence in academic endeavors.
Sun reports that the institution was Established in 2011, the Federal University of Lafia has rapidly expanded its academic offerings, boasting 53 functional departments across 12 faculties and various resource centers and academic directorates.

Moreover, the university places a strong emphasis on preparing its students for successful careers, whether in lucrative jobs or as entrepreneurs. “Staff and students of this University are being engaged on a business template to achieve standards that prepare the students for lucrative jobs or as entrepreneurs,” Professor Rahman explained.
Reflecting on the abundance of academic conferences in today’s world, Professor Rahman expressed hope that the outcomes of this conference would address various societal challenges. “It is my hope that the outcomes of this conference will address various problems in our society,” he remarked.
He said the international conference at the Federal University of Lafia stands as a beacon of collaboration and understanding, fostering dialogue and innovation across borders.
He urged the participants to delve into discussions and exchange ideas, noting that the conference promises to pave the way for new perspectives and opportunities in the pursuit of knowledge and truth.
Professor Ann Asuquo’s keynote address, representing Professor Ekanem Ikpi Braide, underscored the critical importance of utilizing research work conducted by various universities across Nigeria. Her speech centered on the theme “Science and Humanities: Bridging the Divide for Human Development.”
The essence of her message lies in the recognition that both scientific and humanistic disciplines play integral roles in fostering human development. Science contributes through technological advancements, medical breakthroughs, and innovative solutions to societal challenges.
On the other hand, humanities provide insights into culture, ethics, history, and social dynamics, enriching our understanding of human experiences and fostering empathy and critical thinking.
By emphasizing the need for collaboration among academicians from diverse fields, Professor Asuquo highlighted the interconnectedness of knowledge and the potential for interdisciplinary approaches to address complex issues.
This collaboration allows for the synthesis of ideas, methodologies, and perspectives from different disciplines, leading to holistic and sustainable solutions to societal problems.”

In his welcome address, Professor Aleruchi Chuku, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee, underscored the core objective of the 3rd International Annual Conference: to address and advance human development. She emphasized that the conference serves as a platform for sharing ideas and expertise across diverse fields of learning.

In his goodwill message, Commissioner for Education, Mr. John W. Mamman, conveyed his happiness regarding the event and commended the choice of theme, emphasizing its relevance.
He noted that the theme, “Science and Humanities: Bridging the Divide for Human Development,” resonates well with recent achievements of the university, particularly the joint convocation where 52 first-class students graduated.
Furthermore, Mr. Mamman acknowledged to a pledge of continued support from the Nasarawa state government by assuring ongoing backing while reaffirming the government commitment to the advancement of education and the development of the institution.
“This support is crucial for sustaining the university’s momentum and fostering an environment conducive to academic excellence and innovation.”
In his representation of the Royal Father of the Day, His Highness, Justice Sidi Bage Rtd, CP Usman Baba Ubandoma (Rtd) conveyed his appreciation for the theme of the conference and expressed his delight at being part of such a significant program.
He highlighted the importance of implementing the knowledge gained from the conference, particularly in managing projects built by government or companies, to bring relief to communities.
His Highness emphasized a crucial shift in perspective, indicating that it is the responsibility of community leaders to guide and maintain projects, rather than relying solely on donors. This recognition underscores the importance of community ownership and sustainability in ensuring the long-term success and impact of development initiatives.
He added that there is the need to empowering communities with the knowledge and resources needed to take charge of their own development, fostering self-reliance and resilience while highlighting the role of leadership in facilitating positive change and driving progress at the grassroots level.
