Rt. Hon. (Barr.) Ime Bassey Okon, the Member representing Itu/Ibiono Ibom Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has been commended by the Center for Human Rights and Accountability Network (CHRAN) for his impressive delivery of constituency projects that directly address the needs of his constituents.

This recognition came after CHRAN’s independent inspection and tracking of federal projects across Itu and Ibiono Ibom Local Government Areas on Wednesday, June 4, 2025. The exercise was part of the group’s broader good governance tour across Akwa Ibom State to monitor projects executed by public office holders.

The CHRAN delegation, led by its Director, Otuekong Franklyn Isong, and Secretary, Comrade (Barr.) Christopher Ekpo, consisted of 22 respected civil society advocates and journalists. The team visited multiple sites to assess the quality and impact of the projects facilitated by Hon. Ime Okon in the constituency.

Projects tracked included a four-classroom block with toilet facilities at PCN Primary School, North Itam; a six-classroom block at the Technical College in Ayadehe; a solar-powered borehole at Afaha Itam; solar streetlights installed across several communities in both Itu and Ibiono Ibom; a 1.5 km road in Mbak Itam III; a Civic Centre in Idoro; and an ongoing Civic Centre project in Nkwa Ibiono.

Community feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Residents expressed appreciation for the infrastructure and amenities brought to their areas. Mr. Isaac Asuquo Edet, a beneficiary of the borehole in Afaha Itam, recounted the hardship faced by residents who previously walked long distances to fetch water. Elder John Etim Bassey, Principal of the Technical College in Ayadehe, thanked the federal lawmaker for the classroom project but appealed for additional support in the form of water and sanitation facilities.

CHRAN confirmed that the projects were executed according to the approved specifications and budget. However, the organization recommended that Hon. Okon facilitate the provision of classroom furniture, replace blackboards with modern whiteboards, and connect toilet facilities to running water where necessary.

In its post-tour statement, CHRAN also appealed to relevant government agencies to urgently repair the deteriorated portions of Effi Itam and Ntiat Roads and called for faster progress on the Calabar-Itu Highway project.

Describing Hon. Ime Okon as a “responsive and accountable legislator,” CHRAN urged other public office holders to emulate his approach to governance by delivering measurable results and maintaining transparency in the use of public funds.
