The Federal Executive Council has approved the demolition and complete reconstruction of the Carter Bridge in Lagos, citing the structure’s inability to be rehabilitated.
Minister of Works, David Umahi, briefed journalists after the council meeting chaired by the President, confirming that N5.6 billion has been allocated to hire advanced engineering consultants for the bridge’s design and cost assessment.
Umahi explained that extensive consultations with stakeholders determined that the bridge could no longer be restored safely. “The total recommendation was that Carter Bridge can no longer be rehabilitated; it should be demolished and then a new bridge constructed,” he said.

The minister emphasised that the project forms part of a broader plan to strengthen critical transport infrastructure across the country. The FEC also approved five other major infrastructure projects, including highway reconstruction and upgrades across multiple regions.
Targeting efficient delivery, Umahi noted that the council aims to present at least four completed projects per region for presidential commissioning by May 15. “These are not palliative works; they are major infrastructure projects,” he said.
Carter Bridge, a key link between Lagos Island and the mainland, serves as a major traffic corridor, making its reconstruction crucial for easing congestion and enhancing transportation safety.
The approval reflects the administration’s broader commitment to modernising critical infrastructure and ensuring that major transport routes meet contemporary engineering standards.
