In an era where technology is seamlessly integrated into every aspect of our lives, the importance of thoughtful product design cannot be overstated. At the forefront of this intersection between innovation and user experience is the lead, Product Designer at CBC Group and SRHIN.

With a passion for creating intuitive and engaging products, Fawaz Adewale Bello, has been instrumental in transforming how users interact with technology.

With years of experience in the industry, he has led design teams that have launched groundbreaking products, setting new standards for excellence in design and functionality. Fawaz’s approach goes beyond aesthetics; it’s about solving real-world problems and enhancing the daily lives of users through empathetic and user-centered design.

We had the opportunity to sit down with Fawaz to discuss the critical role of product design in today’s tech landscape, the challenges and rewards of leading a design team, and insights into the future of technology and design. Below is our insightful conversation that sheds light on how design shapes innovation and drives success in the tech industry.

How would you define the role of product design in a tech company? What sets it apart from other disciplines in technology?

Fawaz: Product design is the bridge between technology and the human experience. While engineering ensures that a product functions correctly, product design ensures that it feels right to the user, offering a seamless, intuitive experience. In a tech company, design is not just about aesthetics—it’s about solving problems. It’s about understanding user needs, behaviors, and frustrations, and translating that understanding into a product that users want to engage with. This requires balancing form and function, anticipating user behavior, and even creating an emotional connection with the product. What sets it apart from other disciplines is its ability to humanize technology, making complex systems simple and enjoyable to use.

Why is product design critical to the success of tech companies, especially in an age where users are more demanding, and competition is fierce?

Fawaz: Product design is critical because users have more choices than ever before, and they expect nothing short of excellence. In today’s fast-paced tech world, having a functional product is no longer enough—users expect products that are easy to use, visually appealing, and personalized to their needs. Design plays a crucial role in differentiating products in a crowded market. It’s often the difference between a user sticking with a product or abandoning it for a competitor. Design also impacts user loyalty; well-designed products build trust and foster an emotional connection, leading to higher retention rates. In essence, great design doesn’t just improve the experience—it defines the brand and contributes directly to a company’s bottom line.

How does product design influence innovation within a tech company?

Fawaz: Product design is often the catalyst for innovation. While engineers push the boundaries of what’s technically possible, designers challenge the status quo by asking, “What if?” and “Why not?” Product design encourages companies to think beyond existing paradigms and consider new ways of interacting with technology. By focusing on the user experience, design can reveal new problems to solve, which in turn drives innovation. For example, the design of a new interface or interaction model can inspire the creation of entirely new technologies or approaches. Additionally, design teams are often the ones to bring an outsider’s perspective into the tech space, integrating broader cultural and behavioral trends into the product, which can lead to breakthroughs that purely technical teams might overlook.

What role does empathy play in the product design process, and how do you ensure that design decisions are user-centered?

Fawaz: Empathy is at the core of the product design process. Without truly understanding the user’s pain points, motivations, and environment, it’s impossible to design products that resonate on a deeper level. At the beginning of any project, we invest a lot of time in research—whether through interviews, usability testing, or observing users in their natural settings. This allows us to immerse ourselves in their world and gain valuable insights that guide our design decisions. Throughout the design process, we constantly return to the question: “How does this benefit the user?” It’s essential to validate our designs through continuous feedback loops, iterating based on real-world use, not just assumptions. Ultimately, user-centered design isn’t just about making something look good—it’s about making sure every decision we make serves the user’s needs.

As the lead of Product
Design, how do you foster collaboration between designers, engineers, and other departments to achieve a unified vision?

Fawaz: Collaboration is essential for success in any tech company, and as the lead of Product Design, it’s my role to break down silos and ensure that everyone is working toward the same goal. We’ve built a culture where designers, engineers, product managers, and other stakeholders see themselves as part of one team, rather than separate functions. This starts with open communication. We encourage cross-functional teams to be involved early in the design process, so everyone can contribute their expertise from the start. We also prioritize regular touchpoints—whether through design reviews, workshops, or informal check-ins—to ensure alignment and address any challenges before they become roadblocks. This collaborative approach ensures that design is fully integrated into the development process and that the final product reflects a shared vision, not just a design or engineering-driven agenda.

How do you balance creativity and functionality in product design, especially when constraints like timelines and budgets come into play?

Fawaz: Balancing creativity and functionality is always a challenge, but constraints can actually drive innovation. Design thrives on limitations, as they force us to think creatively within boundaries. It’s important to remember that design isn’t just about creating beautiful interfaces—it’s about solving problems in practical, user-friendly ways. When working with timelines and budgets, we prioritize functionality first: what’s the core problem we’re solving? Once we’ve defined that, we explore creative solutions that fit within those parameters. It’s a process of constant iteration and refinement. Importantly, we keep the user in mind at every stage. Sometimes, the most elegant solutions come not from lavish design but from a simple, well-executed idea that meets the user’s needs effectively.
