The Accountant General of the Federation (AGF), Oluwatoyin Madein, has emphasised the necessity of streamlining tax processes and fostering fairness to enhance taxpayer compliance.
Madein spoke at the Workshop on Enhancing Tax Compliance and Revenue Generation, organized by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) in Abuja on Thursday.
Represented by Kabiru Makinde, the OAGF expressed delight at the workshop’s ability to bring together stakeholders to discuss contemporary economic issues affecting the nation.
She urged participants to collaborate and innovate as they work towards achieving long-term fiscal sustainability.
Madein further expressed confidence that the insights gained from the workshop would lead to actionable recommendations, contributing to a more robust economic framework.
“This workshop provides a platform for sharing experiences and engaging ideas essential for the economic transition we face.
“Together, we can overcome past deficits and improve tax adjudications. Let us forge a path towards a fairer, more equitable future for our nation,” she urged.
Earlier on, the Executive Chairman of FIRS, Zacch Adedeji, in his remarks, noted that it is imperative for the government to look inward and increase its internally generated revenue, particularly in light of the economic challenges facing the nation.
Adedeji, however, assured that this does not necessarily mean increasing tax rates, but focusing on blocking leakages and ensuring full compliance with the existing tax laws. He added that FIRS cannot achieve its mandate without the effective collaboration and support of the Accountant-Generals in the country.
