Facebook Marketplace records more than 835,000 listings monthly in Nigeria, with electronics, fashion and household items emerging among the major categories traded on the platform.
The figures, released by Meta as Facebook Marketplace marks its 10th anniversary, highlight the growing use of digital platforms by Nigerians to discover products, sell used and new items, and connect with buyers and sellers within their communities.
According to the company, electronics account for more than 180,000 listings monthly, while home items and fashion each generate over 110,000 listings.
Home improvement products contribute more than 40,000 listings every month, reflecting the range of goods available to users seeking everything from electronic gadgets and clothing to furniture and household essentials.
Marketplace provides a dedicated space within Facebook for users to list products, browse available items and communicate directly with potential buyers and sellers.
Meta said the service was developed after observing that users were already buying and selling products through Facebook Groups, prompting the company to create a dedicated platform to simplify the process.
Speaking on the anniversary, Oluwasola Obagbemi, Head of Communications, Sub-Saharan Africa at Meta, said buying and selling had become part of the everyday activities through which people connect on Facebook.
“We built Marketplace because people were already trading in Facebook Groups, and we wanted to give that a dedicated home where it’s simpler to discover products and connect with buyers and sellers,” Obagbemi said.
She added that the company was recognising the people and communities that had made the platform useful over the past decade, while continuing to promote safer transactions.
For buyers, Marketplace provides an avenue to search for products, compare available options and communicate with sellers to obtain additional information before making purchasing decisions.
Sellers, in turn, can list their products and reach potential customers who may be interested in their offerings.
The platform’s range of categories also creates opportunities for individuals and small businesses to display their products to prospective customers, although actual sales depend on demand, pricing, product quality and buyers’ confidence in the transaction.
However, online transactions can expose users to fraudulent listings, misleading product descriptions and payment scams, making safety precautions important when using the service.
Meta advises buyers to review sellers’ profiles, examine their other listings and check available ratings before proceeding with a transaction.
For physical exchanges, the company recommends meeting in public, well-lit locations during daylight and informing a trusted person about the meeting.
Buyers are also encouraged to inspect products before making payments where possible, avoid suspicious payment links shared through chats and access payment services through official websites or applications.
Users who encounter suspicious listings or accounts are advised to stop the transaction and report the activity through Facebook.
As Marketplace marks a decade of operation, its reported Nigerian listing figures offer a snapshot of the variety of goods being advertised through the platform. The figures, however, represent listings rather than completed sales and do not independently establish the total value of transactions or the number of active buyers and sellers in the country.
