Award-winning filmmaker Eze Izu Daniel, popularly known as Ichie Coded, has decried the lack of visibility confronting film directors in Nollywood, saying their contributions often receive less recognition than those of actors.
Speaking recently, Eze said directors remain central to transforming scripts into stories, yet their creative efforts behind the camera are frequently overlooked. He noted that while actors enjoy much of the attention, directors often do the work of coordinating performances, shaping narratives and ensuring that a production achieves its vision.
“Directors do the heavy lifting behind the scenes, but the spotlight hardly ever finds us,” he said.
Eze’s passion for filmmaking began through church drama, an experience that introduced him to storytelling and strengthened his desire to shape narratives from behind the camera. More than a decade later, he has established a body of work spanning feature films, short films and television series.

His filmography includes Tare, Wasted, Faded Picture, The Ever After, Keeping Her, 10th Avenue, Epe Idile, Mgbuka and the acclaimed Mothers of the Bride. He has produced and directed Africa Magic Igbo Original Series Iwe and Mgbuka, with his work on Mgbuka earning him the Directors Guild of Nigeria Award for Best Series Director.
His first short film, Raindrops, which he shot as a student in 2012, won the Amaka Igwe BOBTV Award, establishing his credentials as a filmmaker.
A graduate of Theatre and Film Studies from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Eze is a member of the Directors Guild of Nigeria. He is Creative Director of Imaginance Media, a Lagos-based production company focused on creating resonant stories for audiences in Africa and beyond.
Beyond filmmaking, Eze is committed to development. He works as a Mindfulness and Meditation Trainer and an A Better Me Model coach, helping people pursue self-awareness and growth.
Guided by peace, unity and continuous growth, Eze said he remains committed to telling stories while advocating greater recognition for directors and other professionals whose creative labour happens behind the scenes.
