Former Resident Electoral Commissioner in Enugu State (REC), Dr Emeka Ononamadu has attributed ineffective communication and mistrust of the police by citizens as reasons behind mob justice.

He highlighted that building trust between citizens and police requires continuous communication, shared accountability, and lawful conduct, stressing that institutionalization of mutual accountability frameworks can deepen police-citizen cooperation and enhance public safety.

Ononamadu who is the Executive Director of Citizens Centre for Integrated Development and Social Rights (CCIDESOR) also recommended implementing the Police Reform Agenda to prioritize lawful and people-centered policing and fostering synergy among police, traditional rulers, and local security networks.

Ononamadu who spoke with journalists at the weekend in Owerri, the Imo State capital, emphasized the need for civil society organizations and media to facilitate dialogue between communities and police to promote public education, and monitor police reforms.

He also stressed that communities and traditional institutions should participate in accountability forums, collaborate with police to address local security challenges, and discourage mob justice.
