The former governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 general elections in Sokoto State, Saidu Umar, has defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Umar announced his resignation from the PDP in a letter addressed to the party chairman of Sarkin Adar Kofar Atiku Ward in Sokoto South Local Government Area of the state.

In the letter, the former PDP governorship candidate said his decision to leave the party followed careful reflection on the ongoing legal challenges and the existence of parallel leadership within the party at the national level.

According to him, the development within the party had made it necessary for him to reconsider his political future and seek an alternative platform.

“I wish to formally announce my decision to join the African Democratic Congress after careful consultations with my supporters, political associates and stakeholders across the 23 Local Government Areas of Sokoto State,” he said.

Umar expressed appreciation to the PDP for the opportunity given to him to contest the 2023 governorship election on its platform.

“I remain grateful to the Peoples Democratic Party for the opportunity to contest as its governorship candidate in the 2023 general elections.

“However, I believe the African Democratic Congress now offers a better platform to continue the pursuit of justice, good governance and the development of our dear state and nation at large,” he added.

He also called on his supporters and political associates to join him in the new party as he begins another political journey.

“I urge my supporters and well-wishers to join me on this new political journey for the progress of Sokoto State and our dear country, Nigeria,” Umar said.

Umar was also a commissioner for finance and secretary to the state government under the Aminu Waziri Tambuwal administration
