A former member of the House of Representatives, Robinson Uwak, has commended President Bola Tinubu over the removal of the fuel subsidy regime.

In a statement he signed on Wednesday, Uwak said the trillions of naira annually ploughed into the subsidy payments could have been utilised for the provision of better roads, railways and power in the county.

He said the policy had enriched a few persons in the oil industry and had encouraged corruption and inefficiency in attracting the right investments in refineries supply chains and jobs creation.

Uwak however, pleads with the government to quickly come up with palliative measures to cushion the effect of the fuel subsidy removal on the citizenry.

He said the removal has led to an increase in transport fares and food prices which are biting hard on the citizenry.

“The government must ensure that the proceeds from the subsidy removal and the increase in pump prices of petroleum products must be invested in critical areas for the benefit of the citizens”, he said.

He expressed confidence in the ability of the Tinubu and Kashim Shettima administrations to improve the economic situation in the country.

Uwak, who is the founder of the Robinson Uwak Foundation (TRUF), which has been involved in charity work in Oron Constituency of Akwa Ibom State, called for concerted efforts by public-spirited individuals and organisations in Nigeria to lend a helping hand to less privileged Nigerians in these trying times.
