Hon Chinedu Nsofor, former assistant to late Ohanaeze Ndigbo President General, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, has kicked against the recent proposal by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) to increase the salaries of political office holders.

In a statement yesterday in Owerri, Nsofor condemned the proposal, describing it “as a display of insensitivity towards the plight of ordinary Nigerians.”

He said: “At a time when tens of millions of Nigerians are grappling with rising food prices, high unemployment, and declining living standards, proposing a 100 per cent salary increase for political leaders is deeply disturbing and morally questionable. It sends the wrong message about leadership priorities.” Nsofor who is also a former senatorial aspirant for the Anambra South by-election emphasised that political office should not be seen as a pathway to personal enrichment but as a call to service:

He recalled that during his contest for Senate in the just concluded by-election, he made a campaign promise to forfeit his entire salaries and channel it to the welfare of the poor and downtrodden in his senatorial district if elected.

This, he said, should be emulated by anyone who is genuinely interested in serving his people as a political office holder and not to talk about increment in salaries of political office holders. Nsofor further urged RMAFC and government authorities to prioritise critical areas of national development rather than political privileges.
