The Federal Government has been advised to urgently set up a social work council, in a bid to regulate the proliferation of quack training of social workers.

In her recently delivered lecture, Professor Chinwe Nwanna called on the Nigerian government to see the establishment of the Social Work Council as a way of setting standards, promoting ethics, and ensuring quality training.

The erudite scholar stated this at a lecture titled “Field Education: The signature of pedagogy of social work education”, which was part of her retirement programme, organised by the Department of Social Work, at the University of Lagos Faculty of Social Science lecture hall.

The versatile Professor seized the chance to place on record notable recollections of her time and accomplishments that evolved in the search of the truth.

Nwanna also highlighted that societal problems (non-establishment of social work units in schools) and Covid 19 (Lockdowns, restrictions on gatherings and physical distancing) are the major challenges faced by field education.

She advised that a logbook for field placement, field education office, pre-placement agencies, and field education seminars are good strategies to make field education a signature pedagogy of social work education.

She further recommended the establishment of social work departments in schools and urged all universities to place their students in various areas of social work for a field work practicum.
