The people of Sangana Communities in Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State have called on the state and federal governments, especially the Niger Delta Development Commission to intervene in the surging water level of the sea that has destroyed homes, properties and livelihoods recently.
Sangana as an oil rich producing coastal community with over seven operational multinational oil companies operating consistently over the past decades, which has contributed grossly to the economy of the state and the nation, but faced constant devastating surging water levels of the Atlantic Ocean.
In a statement made by the former Chairman of Brass Local Government Area and CEO of Be-Multi World Plus Ltd, Dr Bello Bina, called on the state and federal government to intervene in proffering lasting solutions to the challenges facing the people of the community urgently.
Dr. Bina while commending the tremendous efforts of the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Ongobere Abraham, called for more support from the state and federal government in finding a lasting solution to the devastating perennial flooding of the community .
Bina appealed to the state and federal government, especially the Niger Delta Development Commission and other intervention agencies to come to the aid of the people of the community.
Bina, while highlighting the devastating nature of the constant rising water level of the sea, expressed sadness over the pains experienced by the people of the community, which has become imperative for the state and federal government to act immediately.
“The State Government, Federal Government, NDDC, Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, IOCs and other agencies as a matter of urgency, should intervene and proffer solutions to the surging water level of the Atlantic Ocean to alleviate the sufferings of the people,” he added.
Dr. Bina added that if proactive steps are not made by the constituted authorities in proffering lasting solutions to the challenges facing the community, the coastal communities might go into extinction in the nearest future as a result of erosion.
The Ijaw Youth Council Central zone in a statement by its Information Officer, Ginah Williams Ikio called on the federal and state government, as well as multinational corporations operating in the region, to urgently address the problem in the area.
‘’The Ijaw Youth Council Central zone is deeply concerned about the plight of the residents of Sangana community and the surrounding areas, who are now struggling to cope with the aftermath of the surge. The destruction of farmlands has led to food shortages and economic hardship, while the displacement of residents has left many homeless and vulnerable.
‘’We are calling on the federal and state government to provide immediate relief and assistance to the affected communities, including the provision of emergency shelter, food, and medical aid. We also urge multinational corporations operating in the region to take responsibility for the environmental impact of their operations and to support efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change in the area’’ he said.
It is crucial that urgent action is taken to address the devastating impact of the Atlantic Ocean surge in Sangana community and prevent similar disasters from occurring in the future. The residents of the community are counting on the government and corporations to come to their aid and help them rebuild their lives.’’
