EPL: Why I didn’t join Man United – Donnarumma

Gianluigi-Donnarumma-point

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has revealed the reaction he received from Gianluigi Donnarumma, Manchester City’s keeper, when he questioned his decision to avoid the Red Devils.

Schmeichel revealed he tried to persuade the Italian goalkeeper to join Manchester United.

He made this statement following Manchester United’s 3-0 loss to Manchester City on Sunday.

Pep Guardiola’s side ran away with all three points with goals from Phil Foden and Erling Haaland (2).

It was Donnarumma’s first game for the Cityzens after he joined the club in a £26 million move from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer.

After the game, Manchester United legend, Schmeichel, went over to the Italian shot-stopper on the touchline asking him why he opted to join City instead.

“I’ve followed them [PSG] in the Champions League and I’ve spoken to him a lot of times, he speaks English by the way,” he said on Premier League Productions.

“Over the last season I kept saying to him, ‘we want you at Man United’, and he said, ‘I’d love to come to England’.

“I did. So I went to him [after Sunday game], ‘what are you doing here, you should be in the other goal [for United]’, but he said, ‘I’m very, very happy here’. He showed it, he gave it to the team today, didn’t he.”

The defeat suffered by Schmeichel’s former club on Sunday was their second of the season. The Red Devils have played four matches so far with one win, one draw and two defeats.

They are currently 14th on the Premier League with just four points after 4 games.

Their next game in the Premier League is against Chelsea at Old Trafford.
