Aston Villa secured their first Premier League victory of the season after defeating Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday.
Tottenham had entered the game still searching for their first league goal of the campaign, having failed to score in their opening four Premier League matches.
Despite a bright start from the hosts, Villa took control of the contest and punished Tottenham’s defensive lapses to claim all three points.
Tottenham created several opportunities early in the game, with Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki producing important saves to keep the visitors in the match.
However, the hosts’ failure to convert their chances proved costly.
Villa opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time through Johan Manzambi, who tapped the ball home after Boubacar Kamara’s cross.
The goal came while Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven was temporarily off the pitch receiving treatment, leaving Spurs exposed at the back.
Tottenham continued to struggle after the interval and Villa doubled their advantage in the 67th minute through Nicolas Jackson.
The forward produced a strong individual effort to put Unai Emery’s side firmly in control of the match.
Emiliano Buendía then extended Villa’s lead in the 79th minute with a superb long-range strike, giving Tottenham a mountain to climb.
Tottenham eventually ended their long wait for a Premier League goal when Conor Gallagher pulled one back in the 86th minute.
Jan Paul van Hecke then headed in a second goal deep into stoppage time after connecting with James Maddison’s free-kick.
But the late comeback was not enough to rescue a point as Villa held on for a 3-2 victory.
The defeat means Tottenham remain without a Premier League victory after five matches, having collected just two points from a possible 15.
Villa, meanwhile, picked up their first league win of the season and moved onto four points after five matches.
The result will add to the pressure on Tottenham after their difficult start to the campaign.
Spurs had shown promise during the opening stages of the match, but their inability to turn possession and chances into goals, combined with defensive mistakes, ultimately cost them.
The result also provided Villa with a much-needed boost after their difficult opening weeks of the Premier League season.
The visitors showed resilience by withstanding Tottenham’s early pressure, exploiting defensive openings and taking their chances when they arrived.
Tottenham finally scored their first Premier League goals of the season, but the breakthrough was overshadowed by another defeat.
