Newcastle United have agreed a deal worth up to £52m with Manchester City for Spanish midfielder Nico Gonzalez as they strengthen their squad ahead of the new Premier League campaign.
The 24-year-old is set to become Newcastle’s latest signing after the club reached an agreement with City for his transfer.
Newcastle had initially concentrated on signing players from clubs outside England during the current transfer window but have now turned to Premier League experience to reinforce their squad.
The club see Gonzalez as a player who can adapt quickly to the demands of English football, having spent about 18 months at Manchester City after joining from Porto.
Gonzalez had previously expressed a desire to remain at the Etihad Stadium, but City’s moves to strengthen their own midfield have created an opportunity for him to leave.
City have agreed an £85.6m deal for Lille midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi and also signed Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for £116m.
Gonzalez was an unused substitute when City came from behind to defeat Bournemouth 2-1 in the manager’s first Premier League match in charge.
His departure would make him the fourth senior midfielder to leave Manchester City this summer, following Bernardo Silva, Rodri and Tijjani Reijnders.
Newcastle view Gonzalez as a midfielder capable of adding experience, depth and further quality to their squad as head coach Matthias Jaissle reshapes the team.
The agreement with City puts Gonzalez on course to move to St James’ Park, subject to the completion of the remaining formalities of the transfer.
