Enzo Maresca has described his appointment as Manchester City manager as one of the greatest honours of his coaching career, saying it is a privilege to succeed Pep Guardiola after the Spaniard’s decade of unprecedented success at the Etihad Stadium.
The Italian made the remarks on Friday during his first official press conference since taking charge of the Premier League champions following Guardiola’s departure at the end of last season.
Guardiola ended his 10-year spell at City after transforming the club into one of Europe’s dominant forces, winning 20 major trophies, including multiple Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League. His departure marked the end of one of the most successful managerial eras in English football.
Maresca, who previously managed Chelsea and Leicester City, acknowledged the scale of the challenge awaiting him but insisted he is embracing the opportunity with confidence.
“First of all, I have to say that it’s a privilege,” Maresca said. “I’ve said many times that I consider Pep probably the best coach in the world over the last 20 to 25 years. But again, it’s a challenge. It’s nice. It’s a privilege.”
Replacing a manager of Guardiola’s stature comes with enormous expectations, particularly given the struggles experienced by several elite clubs after the departure of long-serving trophy-winning coaches. Manchester United, for example, endured years of instability following Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013.
However, Maresca believes Manchester City’s strong football structure and long-term planning will provide the stability required for a seamless transition.
“I think the organisation is the main thing,” he said. “The club has had only three managers in 17 years. That is not normal in modern football, and it doesn’t happen often.”
According to the 46-year-old, the club’s consistency behind the scenes gives him confidence that Manchester City can remain among England’s leading clubs despite the change in leadership.
“So this is probably one of the reasons I believe we can continue to do a great job,” he added.
Maresca now begins the task of building on Guardiola’s remarkable legacy while attempting to guide Manchester City through a new era, with supporters hoping the club’s winning culture can be sustained under fresh leadership.
