EPL: Man Utd also benefited from offside goal against Man City – Maresca

Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca has recalled a previous Manchester derby in which Manchester United scored what he described as an offside goal.

Maresca was reacting to Professional Game Referees Limited (PGMOL) chief Howard Webb’s admission that Erling Haaland’s winning goal against United last Sunday should not have stood.

Haaland’s goal was initially ruled out for offside by the on-field referee before the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) intervened and overturned the decision.

The decision has since come under scrutiny, with Webb admitting that VAR made an error in allowing the goal to stand.

Pro Ref has since contacted United and apologised for the decision.

Maresca subsequently pointed to a previous derby involving the two Manchester clubs, claiming United had also benefited from an offside goal.

“Three years ago we lost the Derby at Old Trafford with a goal that had to be disallowed. No one apologised. We are still waiting for the apology,” Maresca said.

“Sometimes it happens for you, sometimes against you. It’s football.”
