Manchester City have opened talks with Cody Gakpo’srepresentatives over a possible move for the Liverpool forward, with the Premier League champions stepping up their transfer activity with the summer window entering its final days.
According to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, City made contact with Gakpo’s representatives on Monday to discuss a potential move from Anfield to the Etihad Stadium.
The approach comes as Tottenham Hotspur remain in talks with the Netherlands international and have reportedly already agreed personal terms with the player.
However, Liverpool are understood to be unwilling to sell Gakpo unless they can bring in two wingers before the transfer window closes. Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola is reportedly their priority.
City’s interest in Gakpo comes amid a major overhaul of their squad under sporting director Hugo Viana. The club have already sanctioned several departures, including Bernardo Silva, Rodri, Tijjani Reijnders, Nathan Ake and John Stones.
Rodri has joined Barcelona in a £65 million deal, while Reijnders moved to Saudi Arabian club Al Qadsiah. Nico Gonzalez is also reportedly close to joining Newcastle United.
City have already agreed a deal for 18-year-old Morocco international Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille. The midfielder is expected to cost €95 million, with a further €5 million in potential add-ons, and will sign a five-year contract with an option for another year.
The club are also continuing their pursuit of Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez and remain in negotiations with Palmeiras over 22-year-old winger Allan Elias.
With only eight days remaining in the transfer window, City are expected to strengthen both midfield and attack, making Gakpo one of the latest names to emerge in their late-window plans.
