Matheus Cunha struck in the 89th minute as Manchester United fought back to draw 1-1 with Fulham at Craven Cottage on Sunday, denying the hosts their first Premier League victory of the season.
Fulham had taken the lead in the 63rd minute when United defender Lisandro Martinez turned the ball into his own net, leaving Michael Carrick’s side facing a third consecutive defeat in all competitions.
United, however, responded late as Cunha’s low effort took a deflection off David Affengruber before finding the bottom corner to level the contest with just minutes remaining.
The equaliser was Cunha’s first Premier League goal of the season and continued his record of producing important goals for United. Of his last 12 Premier League goals, 11 have either drawn his side level or put them ahead.
United had opportunities before and after Fulham’s opener but struggled to turn their possession and chances into goals. They finished with 25 shots, their highest total in a Premier League away match without scoring in the Opta era before Cunha finally broke the deadlock.
Fulham also had chances to protect their lead but increasingly dropped deeper as United pressed for an equaliser in the closing stages.
United thought they had another opportunity when the ball struck Fulham defender Calvin Bassey’s arm inside the box, but the referee rejected the penalty appeal after a VAR review.
The result extended Fulham’s wait for a Premier League win, while United avoided what would have been three consecutive defeats and returned to Manchester with a point.
The late goal also gave United some relief after a difficult afternoon in west London, with the visitors only producing their strongest attacking spell after falling behind.
For Fulham manager Alvaro Arbeloa, the result was another missed opportunity after his side had worked hard to protect their advantage and appeared on course for victory.
United’s next league fixture will come after the international break, with Carrick’s side still looking to build consistency after a difficult opening to the campaign.
