The Enugu State Police Command has arrested a 25-year-old man, Ogbonna Nnaji, for allegedly being in unlawful possession of a locally made firearm during a stop-and-search operation, along the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway.

The suspect was apprehended by operatives of the Command’s Distress Response Squad (DRS), at Ugwuoba in Oji River Local Government Area, near the Enugu–Anambra boundary, as part of the Nigeria Police Force’s ongoing Handshake Patrol border security operations.

Police said the suspect was intercepted in early July 2026 while travelling from Anambra State to Enugu, and was allegedly found with a concealed locally made double-barrel pistol.

Confirming the arrest in a statement, yesterday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, said preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect boarded a commuter Toyota Sienna bus at Solution Park in Ekwulobia, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State, before he was intercepted by security operatives.

Ndukwe said, “The suspect, Ogbonna Nnaji (male, 25) was arrested in early July 2026 by operatives of the Command’s Distress Response Squad (DRS) during a stop-and-search operation, at Ugwuoba in Oji River Local Government Area, along the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway, near the Enugu–Anambra boundary. He was found in unlawful possession of a concealed locally made double-barrel pistol during a search.”

He added that investigators were working to determine how the suspect came into possession of the weapon and whether he had links to other criminal activities.

“Further investigations are ongoing to determine the source of the weapon, establish his possible involvement in other criminal activities, after which he will be arraigned in court,” the police spokesman stated.

The Command noted that the arrest came barely four days after the same DRS team intercepted another suspect travelling in a tricycle and recovered a firearm during a similar border security operation on June 28.

The statement noted that the back-to-back recoveries highlight the Command’s commitment to intelligence-driven policing and efforts to prevent the influx of illegal firearms into Enugu State.

Commending the operatives, the Commissioner of Police, Mamman Giwa, praised their vigilance and professionalism.

He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to strengthening security along the state’s borders.
