An unidentified truck driver traveling from Wukari, Taraba State to Awka, Anambra State has been stabbed to death by revenue collectors at Ugwuoba, in Oji River Local Government Area of Enugu State.
It was gathered that the driver was stabbed to death by the tax collectors, who fled the scene immediately they noticed that he was dead.
A witness, who said the incident occurred around 9am, yesterday, said truck drivers had, as a result, blocked Enugu-Onitsha expressway with over a hundred trucks, causing a massive gridlock on the road.
One of the drivers was heard saying that the road would remain closed until the Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, or a top official of the state government comes to address them.
The driver lamented that the touts on the road killed some of his colleagues for doing nothing.
“Enough is enough; we can’t accept it any longer. Why must these people be killing our members like chickens every time? This is not the first, second or third. They do kill our people every time, but today marks the end.
“This road will be blocked until the Enugu State governor comes here to address us,” he fumed.
A witness, who pleaded anonymity, said he heard when the deceased driver was telling the tax collectors that he had paid the produce tax, but they insisted he must pay a fresh one.
He said after a little squabble, they stabbed him on the left side of his chest and he fainted and died later. At the time of this report, the road was still blocked.
